The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA-Nairobi) was established more than 35 years ago. It coordinates multi-disciplinary research programmes in social sciences in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, as well as DRC (Kivu) and South Sudan).
Its objectives are to increase understanding of contemporary dynamic in East Africa, contribute to disseminating knowledge in social sciences, provide training in research for French and East African students, and strengthen institutional partnership and collaborations between French and East African academic and research institutions.
French Institute for Research in Africa has a well-established capacity to conduct expertise in social sciences, notably sociodemographic studies, studies on the living conditions and households’ resource management, studies on new consumption, or urban mapping (access to water). IFRA’s library, merged with the BIEA library since 2009, gives access to collections in English and French.
It has more than 15,000 books and 60,000 periodicals, more than 200 thesis and press reviews that can be accessed in its 150m2 floor. IFRA provides support to research for French and East African students and researchers.
