Sankofa Academy Syokimau is a strong believer of nurturing talents and culture. We achieve this by engaging our students in the different activities during the week e.g. voice classes, piano, and other instruments, horse riding, swimming, soccer, taekwondo, drama, creative arts, and crafts, etc. Sankofa is a mythical bird which means “reach back and get it”.

To reinforce this, we have cultural classes once a week. Sankofa Syokimau branch was started in 2014; however, Sankofa Buru Buru (formerly known as Barbie kids kindergarten) was launched in 1998, specializing in Early years of Learning thus the need to start a fully-fledged Academy in Syokimau.

Nancy, the head of the schools, is a highly qualified kindergarten teacher with the immense wealth of experience in the profession having taught in prestigious international schools, e.g., Peponi, St. Christophers and Aga Khan Nursery, for the most of her career. The urge to give back to her community and the middle class, the same quality of education which is offered in these schools with a subsided fee is what inspired her to start the schools.

Formerly known as Barbie and Now Sankofa Academy, the school has grown into a known brand in the Nairobi private school’s circle. This is the school where nothing is taken to chance. We thoroughly take care of the foundation years and make sure they are as solid as a rock.

Before we started our own Primary, many schools where we fed our children into can attest to this. We are also proud of having Students who have relocated to other countries like the UK and the US with compliments always coming our way. The latest being and I quote, “people here (USA) are surprised at how eloquent Tess is thanks to Sankofa”. That is our success story that gives us more years to continue doing what I do best, “TEACHING” OUR PASSION.
