IGAD Climate Prediction & Applications Centre (ICPAC) is a specialized institution of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Since 1986 we have been in charge of providing climate services to the Greater Horn of Africa.
IGAD Climate Prediction & Applications Centre (ICPAC) purpose? Mitigate the effects of recurring droughts and natural disasters that affect our region and have traditionally led to widespread famine, ecological degradation and economic hardship.
Creating resilience to a changing climate
Temperatures in Africa are projected to rise faster than the global average increase during the 21st century. The IPCC warns that if the global society continues to emit greenhouse gases at current rates, the average global temperature could rise by 2.6 – 4.8o C by 2100. Africa’s recent development gains have been in climate sensitive sectors. Providing quality climate services is key to maintain progresses made as to build resilience of vulnerable populations to climate shocks.
