The Nairobi Railway Museum is a railway museum in Nairobi, Kenya, adjacent to Nairobi railway station.

Containing exhibits from the defunct East African Railways, it was opened in 1971 by East African Railways and Harbours Corporation. It is operated by Kenya Railways.

History

The history of rail transport in Kenya dates back to the period between 1891 and 1895 when raging debates ensued in the British parliament over the necessity of constructing a railway line through a country owned by the Maasai and unlettered African tribesmen. It was laughed off as extremely ridiculous. The cost which was pegged at 5 million pounds was considered exorbitant and earned the line so much resentment in the British parliament and media. Henry Labouchere, the British politician and perhaps the line’s harshest critic in what is now a famous poem christened the whole venture an act of lunacy. He said:

What it will cost no words can express,

What is its object no brain can suppose,

Where it will start from no one can guess,

Where it is going to nobody knows,

What is the use of it none can conjecture,

What it will carry there’s none can define,

And in spite of George Curzon’s superior lecture, It clearly is naught but a lunatic line.
