Oxfam in Kenya is a world-wide development organisation that mobilizes the strength and voice of people against poverty, inequality and injustice.
Oxfam’s vision is a just world without poverty: a world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights, and assume their responsibilities as full citizens of a world in which all human beings are valued and treated equally.
We are an international confederation of 19 Oxfam organisations working together in more than 90 countries. Oxfam works with partner organisations and alongside vulnerable women and men to end injustices.
All Oxfam’s work is framed by our commitment to five broad rights-based aims:
- The right to a sustainable livelihood
- The right to basic social services
- The right to life and security
- The right to be heard
- The right to an identity
Oxfam in Kenya
Oxfam in Kenya is a development, humanitarian, and campaigning organisation that works with others to alleviate poverty and inequality. Oxfam envisages a transformed Kenyan society in which each individual, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, or social standing, is able to access basic services, and fully participates in decision making processes on issues that affect their lives and can be heard. In addition Oxfam in Kenya believes that every Kenyan has a right to make free and informed choices to build sustainable livelihoods and resilience to external shocks.
Oxfam in Kenya works on the premise that; poverty and powerlessness are avoidable and can be eliminated by human action and political will.
Since 1963, Oxfam in Kenya has worked with partners in long-term development programmes, humanitarian assistance, peace and conflict resolution programmes and actively engaged in campaigning for better governance and equitable access to services
Oxfam in Kenya has a Oxfam Country Strategy 2015-2020, which focuses on four goals:
(1) Civil society maximises civil society space and ensures more equitable raising and spending of financial resources at county and national level
(2) Poor and marginalised communities get a fair share of natural resources and their benefits
(3) Women gain power over their lives to participate in, and contribute to public life
(4) The severity of future humanitarian crises on communities in Kenya is reduced
